COLUMBUS Adidas Erik Condra Jersey , Ohio (AP) Game 4 lacked the intensity of the three before it, and no overtime heroics were necessary. Instead, the workmanlike Washington Capitals turned in their most complete game of the playoffs, putting away the Columbus Blue Jackets to tie their series at two games apiece. Not that the Blue Jackets did themselves any favors in the 4-1 loss Thursday night. They came out flat, squandered an early power play, surrendered pucks in the neutral zone and couldn’t seem to get any traction until late in the game.Columbus had overcome deficits to win the first two games in Washington. When the series shifted to Columbus on Tuesday, the Capitals prevailed on a lucky bounce in double-overtime.Now the best-of-7 series moves back to Washington for Game 5 on Saturday afternoon.”All we’ve done is gotten on even terms,” Washington coach Barry Trotz said. ”We got ourselves in a hole, and we have to continue to push forward. The next game is a real pivotal game. Someone is going to take the lead in this series, and then your back is against the wall. We have to make sure we’re ready to go.”Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and two assists for the Capitals, who made sure the game was never in doubt. Tom Wilson and Alexander Ovechkin each had a goal and an assist, and T.J. Oshie also tallied.”We’ve been a confident group all year,” said Washington goalie Braden Holtby, who finished with 23 saves. ”I don’t think we’ve ever doubted ourselves. We came into this building with the right mindset.”There was no comeback magic this time for the Blue Jackets, who couldn’t seem to shift out of neutral until coach John Tortorella started switching up the lines in the second period.Boone Jenner scored for Columbus, and Sergei Bobrovsky had 29 saves.”There’s no sense asking me things about the game,” a bewildered Tortorella told reporters. ”I’m telling you, we laid an egg Adidas Anton Khudobin Jersey , so I’m not going to break it down for you. We sucked. We sucked. Let’s move by it and see if we play better Saturday afternoon.”Washington led 1-0 after the opening period. Just after Columbus’ Thomas Vanek knocked the puck out of the blue paint with his glove, Kuznetsov shoveled the carom from the right boards out to Wilson, who connected from above the circle at 6:16.The Capitals got their second halfway through the second period on a power play when Oshie flicked in a rebound. Ovechkin beat Bobrovsky from the right circle early in the third period to give the Caps a three-goal lead.A few minutes later, Jenner redirected Josh Anderson’s slap shot to make it a 3-1 game and finally give the record Nationwide Arena crowd of 19,395 something to cheer about. Kuznetsov added an empty-net goal with 2:19 left in the game.”They scored that goal to kind of sneak back in it a little bit, and we didn’t miss a beat,” Washington defenseman John Carlson said. ”Our next shift I think we dominated them, and maybe one or two after that one, too. Those are the kinds of things you need to do to win.”Columbus captain Nick Foligno also couldn’t explain what happened to the Blue Jackets after they had showed so much juice in the first three games.”We know we have to be way better,” he said. ”Maybe it gives us a little kick in the rear to know we have a real good opportunity in front of us to go back there. Home ice hasn’t been too nice to each team. We feel good about ourselves and the fact that we haven’t played our best hockey yet. We’ve got to find it.”NOTES: When a best-of-7 series goes to 2-2, the winner of Game 5 wins 78.8 percent of the time, according to the NHL. … Washington F Andre Burakovsky missed a second game with an upper-body injury. Their 28 wins at the Pepsi Center in the regular season tied the franchise mark held by the 2000-01 squad that went on to capture the Stanley Cup.”We have lots of confidence here,” said MacKinnon , whose team has dropped 12 straight to the Predators. ”The building has been a lot of fun this year.”Colorado isn’t the only team hoping a change of scenery provides a change in momentum – Toronto returns to friendly confines down 2-0 in the series against Boston (7 p.m., NBCSN). The New Jersey Devils are in the same boat versus Tampa Bay (7:30 p.m. Adidas Chris Terry Jersey , CNBC) heading into their first playoff home game since 2012.Then there’s the San Jose Sharks, who are sitting pretty after two road wins against Anaheim (10:30 p.m., CNBC). Now at home, the Sharks get last change and the opportunity to dictate matchups.”It’s a nice luxury being at home, having those matchups,” Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. ”The bigger advantage is the crowd and the environment and being able to sleep in your own bed.”For New Jersey, climbing back in the series boils down to this – avoiding big early deficits. They trailed the Lightning 3-0 in Game 1 and 5-1 in Game 2 before staging a comeback.”We need to play as a group,” said coach John Hynes, who plans to make some lineup changes. ”We can’t have passengers.”MacKinnon said the Avs need to clean up the little things against a savvy Predators team.”We’re in a tough spot right now,” MacKinnon said. ”Two games at home. Hopefully, we can even up the series.”The Predators fully expect a more tenacious rush from a youthful Colorado squad.”They’re persistent,” Nashville forward Austin Watson said. ”There’s no quit in them.”ENCOREBoston hopes David Pastrnak packs his Game 2 performance for the trip to Toronto. The 21-year-old had three goals and three assists to become the youngest NHL player with six or more points in a playoff game, surpassing Wayne Gretzky, according to the Bruins website.”When you’re breaking a Wayne Gretzky record, I hope he realizes at his young age how cool it is,” forward David Backes told reporters. ”Hopefully he had fun last night and enjoyed that moment because it is special.”REASON FOR OPTIMISMThe Ducks can latch on to some recent history for optimism in coming back from an 0-2 deficit. They lost the first two games at home in the second round last year to Edmonton before rallying to win the series in seven games.”That’s the situation we’re in. We have a good team,” Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano said. ”We have a team that’s been in these situations before.”CAKE WALKThis definitely takes the cake: At the start of the playoffs, IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden Adidas Dennis Cholowski Jersey , a Nashville fan, proposed a wager to fellow racer, James Hinchcliffe, a Toronto Maple Leafs supporter. The driver with the team that bowed out of the Stanley Cup playoffs first had to bake the other a homemade cake and present it at an autograph session while wearing the opposing team’s sweater.”Challenge accepted,” Hinchcliffe responded. ”They (Maple Leafs) are going to win it all. Nobody goes further than the team holding the Cup.”Hinchcliffe added: ”Personally, I’m a red velvet guy.”Newgarden said he prefers vanilla.SAVING THE DAYAvalanche coach Jared Bednar thought goaltender Jonathan Bernier played ”OK” in the first two games.”If you look at the importance of goaltending this time of year, good is usually not good enough,” Bednar said.Goaltending is on the minds of the Devils, too. Keith Kinkaid played well down the stretch, but has struggled in the postseason. He was lifted in the second period Sunday after giving up five goals on 15 shots.Cory Schneider, who was the starter most of the season until a hip and groin injury in January sidelined him for a month, finished and did not allow a goal on 10 shots.”There is still a lot of hockey to be played,” Devils forward Taylor Hall said, ”and a lot of hockey on home ice as well.”—AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno and AP Sports Writers Teresa M.
