WELLINGTON Vic Beasley Jr Jersey , Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The New Zealand government is to help fund the rebuilding of the Cook Islands' national secondary school to mark the 50th anniversary of self-government, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said Tuesday.


New Zealand would contribute up to 11.7 million NZ dollars (7. 68 million U.S dollars), Key said in Rarotonga, where he is taking part in the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Cook Islands self-governance in free association with New Zealand.


"That unprecedented arrangement was established in 1965, and since then our two countries have worked together to forge a unique relationship that is stronger today than ever," Key said in a statement from his office.


"This anniversary is a significant milestone and New Zealand wants to mark the occasion with an enduring gift to Cook Islanders. "


The funding would help to rebuild Tereora College Devonta Freeman Jersey , the Cook Islands' greatest education infrastructure priority.


"Schools are both a cornerstone of the community and places of learning which help prepare our young people for the future," Key said.


"It is these students who will form the next generation of leaders and who will build on the relationship our countries have forged over the past 100 years."


Key met with Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna on arrival in Rarotonga earlier Tuesday and would attend the official Constitution Day celebrations Wednesday.


The Cook Islands' free association with New Zealand enables the 15,000 people living in the South Pacific nation to claim New Zealand citizenship and use the New Zealand currency.

Starting with London in 1851, world expositions were held in Europe and in other parts of the world. At the beginning they were fairs where countries celebrated their identities and strove for prestige by exhibiting achievements and imperial possession.
