Des Moines, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - The 23rd-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers put their 11-game home win streak on the line Sunday afternoon as they entertain the Missouri State Bears in Missouri Valley Conference action at the McLeod Center. The Panthers, who have only two defeats on the season against VCU in double- overtime last month and a narrow three-point setback versus Evansville to kick off the 2015 portion of the schedule, have won four straight since bowing to the Purple Aces. The latest victory for the Panthers took place on Tuesday night at Bradley as the team captured a 63-52 decision over the Braves. As for the Bears, they are heading in the opposite direction, dropping three games in a row which has them at 2-3 in conference and in the bottom half of the league standings. Against Evansville last time out, Missouri State came up two points short in a 56-54 decision at home. Missouri State leads the all-time series by a 40-27 count, although the Panthers have won four straight and six of the last seven meetings. The Bears gave themselves a chance to take down Evansville at JQH Arena by limiting D.J. Balentine to only 2-of-12 shooting from the floor, but one of those conversions came with less than six seconds to play in regulation and proved to be the game winner. Dorrian Williams led the MSU attack with 15 points, followed by reserve Christian Kirk with 12 points, while Tyler McCullough and Chris Kendrix responded with 11 and 10 points, respectively, the latter hitting 2-of-4 behind the 3-point line while the rest of the unit came up empty on a combined nine attempts. The Bears are at a disadvantage these days due to the fact that leading scorer Marcus Marshall has been suspended, taking his 19.5 ppg with him. That leaves Austin Ruder as the top active scorer with only 8.5 ppg. Ruder, as well as Williams (7.8 ppg), are both shooting under 39.0 percent from the floor and as a result the Bears find themselves hitting only 41.1 percent as a unit, resulting in 64.3 ppg, which is only slightly better than the 63.3 ppg allowed. The Panthers left no doubt during their meeting with Bradley at Carver Arena, outscoring the Braves 35-18 at the half before taking their foot off the gas and bringing home the 11-point victory. Seth Tuttle was responsible for a game-high 15 points, adding seven rebounds and five assists as he sank all nine of his attempts at the free-throw line. Off the bench it was Nate Buss with another 11 points and seven rebounds of his own as the team shook off 14 turnovers and survived despite pulling down only six offensive boards. Northern Iowa, which entered the weekend trailing both Wichita State and Indiana State in the MVC standings, has been quite devastating on defense when taking on the rest of the league. Those five foes have combined to shoot only 33.8 percent from the floor, including 27.0 percent behind the 3-point line, en route to a pitiful 48.2 ppg. Tuttle takes care of the offense in those conference outings with 15.6 ppg, shooting an impressive 65.1 percent from the floor and also pacing the group with 5.6 rpg and 16 assists, despite fouling out of one contest. But watching Leafs goalie James Reimer go down Thursday night after taking a blow to the head brought back painful memories of something more serious. Reimer lasted just 32 seconds in goal against the Carolina Hurricanes, the victim of an accidental collision with teammate Josh Leivo. Jonathan Bernier replaced him in the 3-2 Toronto loss. Reimer was trying to corral a rebound with his stick at the side of the net and didnt see Leivo, who could not avoid hitting him as he attended to Nathan Gerbe, who was driving at the net. Leivos knee caught Reimers head as he went by. The Leafs goalie lay face down and then was tended to by the team trainer as he remained on his knees for some time before skating slowly to the bench. He went straight to the dressing room and did not come back. "Hes got a headache, he got hit ... basically he got run over a little bit by our own player," Carlyle said when asked about Reimers condition after the game. "The feeling right now is Reimer will be able to practice," the coach added when asked if the team will have to summon another goalie. The Leafs play Saturday in Chicago. Its not the first time Reimer has suffered a blow to the head. Two seasons ago, he missed time due to concussion-like symptoms that were later linked to a neck problem. That problem started in October 2011 when he was hit by Montreals Brian Gionta as he skated through the crease. That injury disrupted a season that followed Reimer signing a US$5.4-million, three-year contract in the summer. He began the campaign as the Leafs No. 1, winning four of five games. Then in the sixth game, he collided with Gionta and was sidelined for more than a month. He also finished the season on the sidelines after taking a shot in practice in late March 2012 and experiencing a return of concussion-like symptoms. "Youre always concerned when any player gets pulled out of a hockey game due to injury," Carlyle said Thursday. "There is a history there, so you have to worry about it for sure." Bernier gave up the winning goal on a bizarre bounce, a play that seemed to catch the Leafs offf guard as play kept going as a result of the new hybrid icing rule.dddddddddddd Varsity Blues goalie Brett Willows was summoned mid-game as an emergency backup. Willows, a Habs fan, is a third-year Blue from Rivers, Man. Willows did not make it onto the bench but Carlyle said he was dressed in the equipment room, ready to go if needed. "It was definitely quite the turn of events," Willows said in a U of T release. "I was out with some of the boys for dinner after practice and my phone went off with a call from coach (Darren Lowe). He told me that one of their goalies went down and that they needed me. I sprinted down Bloor Street in the next 45 seconds and we jumped in the truck and got down there right away." A third-year kinesiology major, Willows ranks second in the OUA and third in the CIS with a .930 save percentage in 16 games. He was coming off a career-high 50-save performance in a 7-3 win over the Ryerson Rams on Wednesday night. Willows previously played for the Dauphin Kings in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Bernier, acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the off-season, and Reimer, the Leafs incumbent, have been sharing duties this season, with Toronto coach Randy Carlyle willing to go with the hot hand. Leivo, who scored his first NHL goal in the second period, said he was unable to elude Reimer. "I couldnt turn or anything so I tried jumping over him but my knee caught his head." he said. "Its an unfortunate play ... I wish it never happened." Carlyles policy of rotating goalies this season has paid dividends. Going into Thursday nights game, the Leafs 2.29 goals-against average tied for fifth in the league. Reimer made 36 saves Tuesday in a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild that saw Toronto outshot 37-14. "You never want to see a guy go down," said Toronto winger Joffrey Lupul. "Thats a new protocol now -- If a guy goes down and stays down like that, hes coming out of the game. We havent been updated on his status. Hopefully hes fine, just got his bell rung a little bit." Bernier said he didnt know what to think when he saw Reimer go down. "I didnt know if he was hurt bad. Randy just told me to warm up."
